This volume of organ Chorales (1736), together with the Twenty little Fugues, are the only two published by Telemann for the organ.  He chose twenty-four well-known melodies, and for each of them he composed two settings, one in three parts and one in two. Therefore one gets forty-eight works.
 
Telemann's language, very different from Bach's and much appreciated by the audience of his time, makes use of simple harmony and clear counterpoint, but also of concertante processes (as in many of his cantatas).  Easy to play, these Chorales have free registration and the pedals are never necessary.  However, Telemann seems to have suggested that one could use them.  With 16’, 8’ or 4’ pedal stops, and the possibility of easily making a continuo in many works, the performer has the opportunity, if he wishes, to play these pieces in various ways and make the audience hear works with unexpected charm, with no equivalent in the field of the baroque organ.
