Raison is often considered as a second-level author who mainly taught, writing for country or monastery organists with poor knowledge (his own foreword contributed to this).  But his works are full of smart ideas, unexpected formulas and personal chord chainings.  His turns and his special way of ornamenting put him in a place between the pre-classics (Nivers) and the classics (Couperin and followers).  Since Titelouze and Louis Couperin he is the first to make a serious use of the pedals and he opens the path for Grigny.  He is also the first French organist to insert pieces in opposite mode into a suite in a single tone.  Due to original registrations he is the inventor of new types of pieces which will be reused after him, and he also offers unique settings (e.g. Voix humaine en taille).  As the ‘Vive le Roy’ is concerned, it’s an absolute must  Bach himself did not mistake about Raison, borrowing not only the theme of his Passacaglia but also the repeated motive of his Prelude in D major.

This book dated 1688 was reissued in two editions during the XXth century: one by Guilmant, magnificent as usually but with some errors and every beam ‘normalized’ (a common practise then), and one by Dufourcq who simply duplicated Guilmant without checking the original, therefore reproducing the same errors, the same editorial choices and the same normalizations, while introducing some unavoidable extra mistakes and omiting Raison’s preface and table.  This new edition follows the modern standards and puts back the original beamings which teach a lot.  It comes with a complete set of Critical Notes and an extensive foreword analyzing Raison's registrations, ornamentation, fingerings, organ, and spotting his essential contribution in the French classical organ.
