Attaingnant was the famous publisher who started to print music in France using the technique based on separate characters mixing notes and pieces of staff.  These two anonymous Masses are one of both volumes issued in 1531 which happen to be the very first works for the liturgical organ ever known in France.  They already follow the principle of alternance between choir and organ idiomatic of the Gallican rite.  Designed for a single manual with no pedals, they were compatible with both main types of instruments available then in churches, the huge Blockwerk of over two thousands pipes and the flexible Ripieno instruments.

These verses show the way of playing by the organsits of the time, able to improvise expressive or brilliant pieces in turn, widely inspired by vocal art, using a technique with nearly no thumb (except for holding long durations).

The other volume issued by Attaingnant at the same time is also available at Chanvrelin (Two Préludes, Magnificats, Te Deum).
